Aussie Rules Finals Week is here – Time to get Your MCG AFL Tickets

There are several great events held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground MCG. Located in Yarra Park, Melbourne, Australia, locals call it “The G” for short. One of the most famous sports venues in all of Australia plays host to cricket, concerts and especially Australian Rules Football matches.

Since the first member grandstand was erected in 1854, MCG has been the host of thousands of spectacular sporting events. Its most historical moment came in 1956 when, after some trepidation, was the main venue for the Melbourne Olympic Games.

More than 100,000 people flooded across the MCG gates that day. Beginning in 1902, the stadium has been the site of the AFL Grand Final held. Attending any event at the MCG is a thrill, but MCG AFL tickets are the prime attraction for this hallmark sports complex.

The G is More than Just MCG

During its storied history, there have been two World Cup Cricket finals at The G. In 2006, Melbourne hosted the Commonwealth Games with the stadium as the centerpiece. Besides MCG AFL tickets, there have been cycling races, tennis matches and even a service conducted by Pope John Paul II in 1986.

Another religious icon, the late Billy Graham, packed a record crowd into the MCG, pulling over 143,000 people through the gates in 1959. In 1974, David Cassidy was the first musician to rock The G. Over the next three decades the likes of David Bowie, Madonna, U2, Elton John, Michael Jackson and the Rolling Stones would play to packed audiences inside the stadium.

Guns & Roses packed The G just a couple years ago for a Valentine’s Day special show. There have been appearances by the kings of world wrestling, plus a visit from the real queen, Queen Elizabeth II. So, while getting the best MCG AFL tickets is probably the prime draw for the MCG, the stadium has welcomed some iconic superstars over the years.

MCG Regular Season Teams

Cricket and concerts are both fun times at the MCG, but the biggest excitement is when Aussie rules football takes center stage. Four AFL teams call “The G” home turf. The Melbourne, Richmond, Collingwood and Hawthorn football clubs play home games at the MCG Stadium.

With three teams hosting AFL games at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds, MCG AFL tickets for more than three dozen exciting Aussie rules matches are available. You can enjoy prime seating for some of the most talented players in the world.

One nice thing about MCG AFL tickets for the regular season is that you have an opportunity to see every single AFL team play at least once. This is great if you’re a fan of a team outside the Melbourne area, or for the really avid Aussie rules football enthusiasts.

Finals Week at the MCG

The AFL finals week kicks off starting Thursday, when two of the stadium’s regular season tenants square off head-to-head. The Richmond Tigers’ 18 wins place them at number one on the ladder heading into their qualifying round battle against the Hawthorn Hawks.

Richmond will look to battle out a third straight victory over the Hawks, beating them back in April, 102 to 89. The very next day, Melbourne will contend in the finals for the first time in a dozen years.

Friday’s kickoff between the Demons and the Geelong Cats will be 7:50pm AEST. With three of the MSG’s resident teams playing during the first week of the AFL finals, a second match at the MSG is all but guaranteed.
