The Brisbane Lions Football Club

Despite being one of the newer clubs to the AFL, the Brisbane Lions have a rich history and have achieved plenty of success over the past two and a half decades.

The Lions entered the AFL competition in 1996 following the merger of two existing clubs — the Brisbane Bears and the Fitzroy Lions. While it may have been a slightly rocky start, the club quickly found their feet and went on to be one of the most successful AFL teams of the early 2000s. Few clubs ever have or ever will challenge the Lions’ record of four successive Grand Final appearances between 2001–2004 and three consecutive AFL Premierships.

Many of the Lions’ most decorated players were a part of these victorious sides, including Michael Voss, Alistair Lynch, Nigel Lappin, and Jason Akermanis.

Their record of success and pre-merger history means the Lions have plenty of rivals in the AFL competition. Matches between Brisbane and Collingwood are always intense affairs. Not only were the inner-city Melbourne clubs of Collingwood and Fitzroy arch enemies but the Magpies were successfully beaten twice by Brisbane on the last Saturday in September during the early 2000s. The establishment of the Gold Coast Suns also led to an intense rivalry between the two clubs, who battle it out yearly for the QClash Trophy.

Despite not having won an AFL Grand Final since the early 2000s, the Brisbane Lions have recorded some success over the past few years. They placed in the top-four three seasons in a row from 2019–2021 and will be looking to turn this good form into September glory.
