The Sydney Swans Football Club
Established in South Melbourne in 1877, the Swans experienced a few early decades of struggle before recording its first premiership victory in 1909. The Swans had early success in the then VFL competition before facing difficulties with recruitment and finances following the Second World War.
During the late 20th century, the AFL began investigating the possibility of expansion and launching a club in Sydney. Starting a team from scratch was too hard, and given the difficulties the Swans were encountering with form and finances, the decision was made to move the club to New South Wales.
It wasn’t until 2005 that the now Sydney Swans experienced success on the big stage, defeating the West Coast Eagles in the Grand Final. The club managed to capitalise on this and made long-term strategic moves that saw them taste victory again in 2012. The Swans have performed relatively well ever since, with a number of finalsl appearances scattered throughout the modern era.
Sydney’s main rivalry is more of a civil war with the Greater Western Sydney Giants. Although the Swans continue to reign supreme over their local counterparts, it will be exciting to see what happens as the younger Giants develop their squad and experience. Hawthorn is definitely in the mix, too, considering the teams have met head-to-head on two Grand Final occasions in the recent past.
Another prominent rivalry is with the West Coast Eagles, a battle that started in the mid-2000s when the clubs played off in two of the most memorable Grand Finals in recent times.
